Bappi Lahiri, one of the biggest and most popular music composers of India, passed away at the age of 69 on Tuesday night. He breathed his last at his residence in Mumbai's suburban Andheri locality. A loved artiste of the country, the renowned musician had been in a critical condition for quite some time.

According to the reports, the veteran singer and music composer was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital a few days back due to cardiac arrest. A pall of gloom was witnessed in Mumbai as the news of his demise spread like wildfire.


Born on August 16, 1949, Bappi Lahiri, had a huge fan base and the music industry has come to a standstill with his demise. The last rites of the artiste will be performed at Worli's Pawan Hans.

Bappi Lahiri’s was a multi-faceted personality and can be said to have touched the hearts of generations with his soulful music. His songs featured in several blockbusters of the ‘80s and ‘90s such as Bandhan Tum Saath Ho, Main Agar Taariwala, Keh Doon Tum Karte Ho and Tum Akele Hote. Bappi Lahiri was not only a fine musician but also an exceptional lyricist and playback singer.


The renowned musician, who did a lot of work with Bollywood stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, also sang for the 2001 Tamil movie Khiladi, which was directed by Karthik Subbaraj.

Bappi Lahiri and Anu Malik were the pioneers of ‘Hindustani’ music in Hindi cinema. Together they won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award three times. Their songs such as Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast, Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai and Tu Mere Dil Mein Hai were huge hits.

He released his debut solo album, Bappi Lahiri, in 1975. He made a comeback with The Journey of Bappi Lahiri in 2005, which went on to win the National Film Award for Best Original Score.

Primarily a playback singer, Bappi Lahiri has penned several songs. These include Choti Si Baat, Kalyug Mein Dil Mange, Jaan Pehele Jaungi and Amar Prem. He has also sung many duets with Lata Mangeshkar.


A bundle of talents, Bappi Lahiri has made his presence felt in numerous fields such as films, television, music, theatre and advertising. He also founded Bappi Saheb Phalke Academy, and Bappi Industries, with his business partner Ajit Singh.

Bappi Lahiri was also the brand ambassador for over 50 brands.

Born on August 16, 1949, Bappi Lahiri had made his debut as a playback singer in 1976 for the film Humse Hai Muqabala. He went on to sing for about 230 films. His last work was the 2017 release Prakash Jha’s ‘Raajneeti’.

He has a huge fan base and is loved across generations.

Funeral details are yet to be announced.
