Payal Kapadia made history at the 77th Cannes Film Festival by becoming the first Indian filmmaker to win the prestigious festival's second highest award – the Grand Prix.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate Kapadia and her team on receiving this prestigious award. He praised her creativity and said she was inspiring a generation of storytellers.

Addressing Kapadia's historic achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, "India is proud of Payal Kapadia for her historic achievement by winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for 'All We Imagine as Light'." A graduate of FTII, her remarkable Talent continues to shine on the global stage and gives a glimpse of the rich creativity in India. This prestigious award not only recognizes her exceptional skills but also inspires a new generation of Indian filmmakers.

Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light was the first Indian film in 30 years to compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or. Although she lost out to Sean Baker's 'Anora', she stressed that just being selected to compete was honor enough.

Kapadia received the Grand Prix Award from How To Get Away With Murder star Viola Davis. She made history by being the first Indian female filmmaker to win this award.

During her acceptance speech, Kapadia asked the festival not to wait another 30 years to select an Indian film again. She also emphasized the importance of showcasing strong female friendships.

The official description of the film reads: "In Mumbai, sister Prabha's routine is disrupted when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate Anu tries in vain to find a place in the city where she can be intimate with her boyfriend." A trip to a beach town allows them to find a space to express their desires.”
